Recently, there have been several attempts made by the Legislature to weaken
judicial independence by moving court rulemaking authority from the judicial
branch to the legislative branch and by moving court moving lawyer regulation
from the Florida Bar to the executive branch of government. The ability of
the Florida Bar to lobby the legislature is very limited, and the Bar is prohibited
from engaging in political activity. As a result, several years ago a group
of concerned lawyers formed LawyersAction.
LawyersAction is a non-partisan,
independent political action committee. It is composed exclusively of lawyers
from every practice area, including real estate, probate, corporate, family,
eminent domain, admiralty, and other fields. LawyersAction is the only political
action committee for Florida lawyers whose sole objective is to protect the
independence of the courts and the independence of the legal profession.
As a political action committee, LawyersAction is involved in political activity
not allowed by a mandatory organized Bar organization. LawyersAction endorses
candidates for statewide office and legislative offices who demonstrate a commitment
to the principles of preserving the independence of the judiciary and the legal
profession. Those endorsements are made after carefully analyzing candidate
questionnaires, personal interviews and voting records. Each election cycle,
LawyersAction issues voting record reports on major legislative issues impacting
the independence of the judiciary and the legal profession.
In addition to endorsing candidates, LawyersAction often makes financial contributions
to the endorsed candidates as well.
The Board of Directors of LawyersAction has wide diversity in geography, race
and gender. The members of the Board are known, not only in their respective
areas, but throughout the state as well. In addition, a substantial number
of leading attorneys, including many past presidents of the Florida Bar, serve
on an honorary board of advisors as well.
Any lawyer in Florida from any practice area is eligible to join and become
a member of LawyersAction. Please join us today to preserve the integrity
of the courts!
